WINGATE, S.C.- For the second consecutive season, Palm Beach Atlantic men’s soccer team found themselves in the NCAA South Region Championship game. Unfortunately for The ‘Fish, 2016 did not end the same way 2015 did, as the Sailfish fell 3-2 to Tampa Friday night at Pride Park on the campus of Wingate University.
Both the Sailfish and the Spartans came out in the beginning of the match exchanging shots trying to strike first, with the Sailfish outshooting the Spartans 7-3. The Spartans were able to get on the scoreboard first late in the opening stanza as Curtis Kirby placed a header in goal off a Tampa corner kick in the 40th minute. Three minutes later a Spartan defender fouled Lucas Coutinho inside the box sending Lucas Kuscevic to take a penalty kick for the ‘Fish. Kuscevic ripped a shot past the goalkeeper to tie the match at one goal a piece.
The Spartans jumped back out in front early in the second half, scoring in the 54th minute by Fredinho Mompremier, and again in the 72nd by Lewis Sugden to make it 3-1 in favor of Tampa.
Jerry Saint-Vil sparked life back into the Sailfish in the 85th minute as the junior connected on a header to bring the Sailfish back within a goal. The spark was unfortunately not enough for PBA, as the ‘Fish were unable to tie the contest in the closing minutes.
With the defeat ending the Palm Beach Atlantic season, the Sailfish finish 2016 15-5-1 overall.
