Sailfish Offense Scores 91 in Season Opening Win over UPR-Rio Piedras

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic women’s basketball team took control early of their season opening game against the University of Puerto Rico- Rio Piedras and kept the pressure on throughout as they cruised to a 91-47 victory. The 91 points is the most for a Sailfish team in their NCAA Division II era, eclipsing the 89 points PBA scored on Warner on Nov. 12 of 2010.
The Sailfish (1-0) led 37-25 at halftime, as freshman Caroline Patrick put up 12 points in the half. Patrick finished with an impressive 24 points including going 5-for-9 from long range in her Sailfish debut. Ayanna Holmes also had a solid first half, scoring eight points and adding four rebounds.
The second half is where Palm Beach Atlantic was able to really open up the lead, as the ‘Fish put up 29 points in the third quarter and followed it up with 25 more in the final quarter of play. Holmes finished with 17 points and nine rebounds in 23 minutes of action. Ciara Cumbie was impressive for PBA off the bench, finishing with her first career double-double as the redshirt-freshman finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Jane Svilberg and Mina Salhia also finished with double-digit points on the night as Svilberg finished with 12 points on 5-for-11 shooting and Salhia added 11 points and three assists. UPR-Rio Piedras (0-1) was led in scoring by Valerie Martinez who finished with 15 points, knocking down four shots from long distance.
The Sailfish will be back in action tomorrow evening as they take on Auburn University- Montgomery at 7:30 p.m. inside Rubin Arena to finish out the PBA Tip-Off Classic. AUM was defeated by Lynn University in the first game of the day by a final score of 80-71.
