No. 12 Sailfish Win in Tampa For First Time

TAMPA, Fla. – No. 12 Palm Beach Atlantic defeated No. 20 Tampa 3-1 on Saturday afternoon for the program’s first victory over the Spartans in the Martinez Center. The win is the 18th straight for the Sailfish.

The Sailfish (18-3) got 16 kills from Ally Rohn and 14 more from Sarah Ragland as the team overcame a .122 attack percentage to hit .220 for the match. PBA hit .382 in the second but it was Ballantyne and Ragland that led PBA, hitting .395 and .400.

In addition to leading the team with 17 kills Ballantyne added a team-high five blocks and five digs. Ragland had three blocks while Rohn added 14 digs and one block. The Sailfish had eight blocks as a team with Molly Burkhardt and Olivia Finckel also adding three apiece.

The ‘Fish fell behind in the first set and were never able to get the offense on track. After trailing 17-10 the ‘Fish were able to close the gap to 18-15 but the Spartans recovered the set 25-20. In the middle of the second the Sailfish took control, turning a 10-10 match into a 15-11 lead. After Tampa closed the gap, the ‘Fish again pulled away, scoring six of eight points to take a 22-17 lead and went on to win the set 25-20.

The ‘Fish again pulled away midway through the third set, overcoming a 15-13 deficit with a 7-1 run. Four straight points – two kills from Finckel and the final point by Rohn – gave the ‘Fish a 2-1 match lead. In the fourth the Sailfish had two match points at 25-24 and 26-25 before Tampa took control and had five set points. A kill by Rohn turned the tide, tying the set at 30-30. A kill by Maddie Span and a block by Ragland and Burkhardt gave the ‘Fish their first win over the Spartans in Tampa and their second straight win over Tampa overall.

The Sailfish return home on Tuesday to host Barry University at 7 p.m.
