WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Palm Beach Atlantic men’s soccer advances to 9-2-1 (5-0-1 SSC) after defeating Rollins College (6-4-1, 2-3-1 SSC) 3-2 at the Rinker Athletic Campus. It did not come easy for the No. 17 Sailfish, as their first-half lead quickly evaporated in the early minutes of the second half, but thanks to late heroics from a pair of veterans, the Sailfish earn their seventh victory in a row.
The Sailfish came out absolutely owning the opening half, outshooting the Tars 12-1, and controlling the possession for the majority of the half. The only goal in the first 45 minutes came in the 13th, as senior Lucas Coutinho scored his second goal of the year, courtesy of a penalty kick. The Sailfish held on to the 1-0 lead for the remainder of the half, only allowing Rollins College one shot.
The tides turned quickly for both teams in the second half as the Sailfish went from leading to trailing in a matter of five minutes and 47 seconds. Rollins’ Toson Popo(’47) and Matt Volk(’51) each scored their seventh goals of the season to give the Tars a 2-1 advantage.
The Tars held their 2-1 advantage until senior Eddy Milien scored his first goal of the 2016 campaign in the 71st minute. Farias Juarez blasted a shot that looked like it was the equalizer, but a Tars defender blocked it right to the foot of Milien who placed it in the net to bring things back to even at two goals a piece.
Less than five minutes later, Juarez got the goal he was looking for, this time coming on a 2-on-1 breakaway with Fredo Dilbert feeding him a perfect pass to put the Sailfish back on top 3-2.
The Tars had three opportunities to tie the game in the closing minutes, including a free kick from that resulted in a beautiful save by Sailfish goalkeeper Elliott Barker. Barker earned the win, advancing to 8-0-1 on the season. Barker picked up three saves on the night, all coming in the second half.
The Sailfish return to action Wednesday, Oct. 19 as they travel to Daytona Beach, Fla. to take on the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Eagles in a non-conference matchup. The ‘Fish return to the Rinker Athletic Campus for the final time during the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 29 as the Sailfish honor their seniors while hosting Saint Leo University.
