DAVIE, Fla. – Facing an 0-2 deficit the No. 15 Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team powered back to defeat Nova Southeastern 3-2 (20-25, 20-25, 26-24, 27-25, 15-13) on Tuesday night. The win is the 12th straight for the Sailfish as they improve to 5-0 in five-set matches.
The Sailfish went to five sets for the fourth straight match but for the first time had to win three straight sets to earn the victory. After leading early in set one, 12-6, Nova scored 10 straight to take control of the match. In the second the ‘Fish pulled within two at 22-20 but the Sharks scored the final three points to take the 2-0 lead in the match.
PBA came out hot in the third, leading 14-10 on a kill by Sarah Ragland but the Sharks chipped away to take a 24-23 lead and hold their first match point. After a timeout Emma Ballantyne pulled the teams all square at 24-24 and an attack error from the Sharks and a kill by Ally Rohn kept PBA alive.
All that worked looked to be for naught in the fourth as the Sharks took an early 9-6 lead forcing an early timeout. Nova continued to hold the edge as PBA burned their final timeout down 14-8. After falling behind 21-15 the Sailfish got momentum back on their side with an 8-0 run led by Rohn who had five kills during the stretch. The Sharks got even at 25-25 but Ragland picked up a kill followed by the set-ending block by Ragland and Molly Burkhardt.
Four straight points in the middle of set five put the ‘Fish on top for good, taking a 9-7 lead as Katie Ballantyne had a pair of service aces during the run. The Sharks didn’t go away, pulling even late at 13-13 but Rohn capped off her night with a pair of kills to give her a career-high 28.
Rohn had 74 attacks on the night to go along with her 28 kills and .243 attack percentage. Just for fun she added 21 digs, three assists and one block. It was just her second 20-kill effort in her career and her total attack number bested her previous high by 15. It was her second 20-20 match of the season after also collecting 21 kills and 20 digs against Flagler.
Burkhardt narrowly missed out on her third triple-double with 51 assists, 10 digs and eight blocks. She added four kills as well. It was her second 50-assist match of the season after picking up 52 over the weekend against Embry-Riddle.
Ragland collected 11 kills and 11 blocks as the Sailfish had 13 team blocks on the night. The ‘Fish hit .174, the same percentage as Nova on the night. Both Olivia Finckel and Emma Ballantyne had seven kills on the night.
The Sailfish are scheduled to return home to host Florida Tech on Saturday at 4 p.m.
