No. 16 Sailfish Sweep Eckerd, Run Win Streak to Eight

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – No. 16 Palm Beach Atlantic had little trouble winning their 8th straight match, sweeping Eckerd College on Friday night by scores of 25-16, 25-11, 25-16. The win is the 23rd in a row for the ‘Fish inside Rubin Arena.

The Sailfish (8-3) hit .306 for the match while Eckerd (7-4) struggled to just a .086 attack. PBA was led by sophomore Sophie Hoekstra who collected nine kills on 17 swings and hit .529 for the match. Freshman Olivia Finckel picked up eight kills on the night while Emma Ballantyne had seven.

Hoekstra led the team through the second set with five of her kills and followed that up with four in the third. The ‘Fish hit .400 in that third set and led off the match at .406 as Ballantyne had five of her kills. Olivia Finckel added four in each of the first and third sets.

Molly Burkhardt dished out 30 assists to lead the team and also collected nine digs. Susie Forbes had nine digs as well as the ‘Fish needed just 44 on the night. Burkhardt added three kills and two blocks to her totals. Sarah Ragland led the team with four blocks on the night despite the ‘Fish having only six total blocks. Ragland added four kills on just eight attempts.

The Sailfish got out to big leads in both sets one and two before coming from behind in the third. PBA won seven of the final eight points in the third set to pull away and scored six of seven midway through the set to overcome a 10-9 deficit and take a 15-11 lead.

PBA will put their winning streaks on the line as they host No. 21 Florida Southern on Saturday at 4 p.m. The ‘Fish won both meetings against the Mocs inside Rubin Arena last year.
