Sailfish Tennis Wins Four Flights at Panther Tennis Invitational

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Over the weekend Palm Beach Atlantic men’s and women’s tennis competed at the Panther Tennis Invitational hosted by Florida Tech with the men claiming four victories in the flighted event.

Pietro de Silva led the ‘Fish with a win at the No. 4 flight singles event and along with Thomas Salmon at No. 2 doubles. De Silva defeated Will Stone from Eckerd College and Silviu Solomon on Saturday before besting Maximiliano Faundez from Eastern Florida St. College 6-1, 6-1 in the finals on Sunday.

In doubles action de Silva and Salmo were winners over Oscar Soderlund and Derek Bell from Florida Southern 8-1 in the finals on Friday. Also winners were a pair of newcomers to the ‘Fish in Bernardo Ferreira and Carlos Niemeyer who won the No. 3 doubles event, 8-1 over Jamison Burch and Ivan Shapovalov from Florida Tech.

Niemeyer also had his own success in singles play, winning the No. 6 flight with a straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, victory over Austin Causey from Florida Tech in the finals. He also defeated Mark Buckman (Florida Southern) and Cameron Sanson (Florida Tech) along the way.

On the women’s side newcomer Laoni Polzin took third in the No. 1 flight, defeating teammate Valerie Nagovitcina 6-2, 6-2. Polzin also defeated Caroline Walter from Florida Tech while Nagovitcina took down Anita Detlava from St. Petersburg College 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 11-9.

Maja Jovic and Carolina Wakiyama both made it to the finals in the No. 4 and No. 6 flight events. Jovic needed three sets in each of her two wins to advance while Wakiyama did it in straight sets.

The Sailfish are back in action on Friday, Sept. 23 as they begin play in the ITA South Regional which will be held in Lakeland, Fla.
