WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Basketball season is around the corner and Sailfish head men’s basketball coach David Balza has officially announced the 2016-2017 Palm Beach Atlantic schedule Monday afternoon.
The 26-game schedule features 24 games against NCAA Division II South Region opponents. The Sailfish also get a full slate of Sunshine State Conference games this year, playing home-and-home match ups with all nine full-time members, as well as home-and-home games versus fellow SSC provisional member Embry-Riddle.
The ‘Fish will play 13 games in the Rubin Arena, with 10 of those being slated as doubleheaders with the PBA women’s team.
“Our goal, as it is every year, is to get to the NCAA Tournament,” said Balza. “With that in mind, we really wanted to challenge ourselves and earn a high strength of schedule. Twenty games in the SSC gives us a head start on that. I think we’ve added to that with our tough non-conference schedule as well. We are excited to be eligible for the conference tournament this year. I know our student-athletes are excited with our schedule, and I hope our fans will be as well.”
The season opens up in Tuskeegee, Ala. as the Sailfish take on Tuskegee University Nov. 11. The ‘Fish open their season in the Rubin Arena their fourth game of the year on Nov. 22, as they take on the University of Puerto Rico Bayamon at 7:30 p.m.
The Sailfish will host the Jay McCormick Classic November 26-27, taking on Lee University and Valdosta State University. Lynn University will be the fourth team in the Classic. Three weeks later the ‘Fish will head down to Boca for the Lynn Holliday Classic another classic hosted by Lynn, and PBA will take on 2013 National Champions Drury University and Pace University.
The Sailfish will ring in 2017 in exhibition form as they travel to Jacksonville, Fla. on Jan. 2 to take on Division I 2016 Atlantic Sun Conference champions the University of North Florida. The game is set for 7 p.m. tipoff and is scheduled to be broadcasted on ESPN3.
Senior Day is scheduled for Feb. 22, as the ‘Fish host Embry-Riddle at 7:30 p.m. The Sailfish will say goodbye to senior Shavanno Cooper.
A new opportunity for the Sailfish this year will be the Sunshine State Conference Tournament. All games against SSC opponents will count in the SSC standings, and if the Sailfish qualify they will advance on to the SSC Conference Tournament in March.
