WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Monica Rojas scored two goals for the ‘Fish and the veteran Sailfish defense held strong as the Palm Beach Atlantic women’s soccer team defeated Spring Hill College 2-1 to open up the 2016 season. The win came in the Sailfish’ first game of the PBA Kickoff Classic.
The first half was all Sailfish as they posed a relentless attack. They however only managed one goal, as Kayla Beaston was strong in net for the Badgers. Rojas scored on a nice give-and-go with fellow junior Morgan Campbell for the first goal of the season.
The Sailfish had an opportunity to take a commanding lead late in the half, but a Sydney Jimenez shot was saved and then the rebound off the foot of Jimenez bounced off the far post, leaving the game with a 1-0 score.
The Badgers pulled even late in the half with a goal from Gabrielle Burmaster in the 45th minute. The game went into half tied despite a 14-3 shot advantage for the Sailfish.
The second half was more of a defensive struggle, with both defenses hanging tough until the 79th minute, when a Claire Allen pass found the right foot of Rojas, and she drilled a shot off of the crossbar and into the back of the net.
Alexis Sanquist was solid in net for the Sailfish, as the sophomore made four saves and allowed just the one first-half goal. Kayla Fisher, Bridget Wollrabe, Karina White, and Stephanie D'Cruz were solid on the defensive front, playing all 90 minutes of the match.
The Sailfish will close out the PBA Kickoff Classic on Saturday evening, as they will square off with Pace University at 6 pm at the Rinker Athletic Campus.
