5th Ranked Sailfish Open Preseason With Impressive Showing Over Division I Opponents

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The defending South Region champion Palm Beach Atlantic men’s soccer team defeated Florida International in Miami Friday night, the 23rd ranked team in Division I, and were leading at home Sunday afternoon against the Florida Atlantic Owls before the match was cut short due to weather. Newcomer Kebba Nyang led the ‘Fish with two goals on the weekend, scoring a goal in each match.

The Sailfish struck first in the match as Nyang scored first goal of the weekend in the 22nd minute off a pass from sophomore Juan Pablo Puelma.
The Blue and White held on to a 1-0 lead until the 44th minute when freshman Fredo Dilbert notched his first goal of the preseason, taking a strike that was first saved by the FIU keeper, but he finished off the rebound to extend the PBA lead to 2-0.
The ‘Fish kept the Panthers off the scoreboard until the 83rd minute as FIU’s Juan Benedetty snuck one past freshman Sailfish goalkeeper Elliott Barker to cut the Sailfish lead in half, 2-1.
The Sailfish outplayed their Division I counterparts, taking more shots, corner kicks, and making more saves on the night.

The lone goal in Sunday’s weather-shortened match came in the 8th minute of the contest as Nyang beat the keeper following a pass from senior all-American Lucas Coutinho for his second goal of the preseason. The freshman’s goal was the only shot by either side in the contest.
The contest was called after an extended half time due to inclement weather in the area
The Sailfish have one preseason contest left before the regular season begins on Sept. 1 in Morrow, Ga. as they take on Clayton State University. Palm Beach Atlantic opens their home campaign Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. against Lynn University.
