Gonzo Breaks PBA Record in 5-3 Win Over Barry

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Leading 2-0 in the bottom of the third and a runner on base, Victoria Gonzalez crushed a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence and into PBA history, as the junior outfielder moved to No. 1 on the Palm Beach Atlantic softball home run record list. The home run was the 22nd of Gonzalez’ career, and breaks the mark set by Sailfish Great Caitlin Bouschet back on May 7, 2011.

Before the big fly, the ‘Fish jumped on the board in the top of the first for two runs, as Gonzalez drove in Kayla Knight on a sacrifice fly, and Maddie Bertisch scored on a Theresa Butler single four pitches later.

The Sailfish added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning as Brianna Rano doubled, and then later came in to scored on an infield single from Bertisch to jump out to a 5-0 lead.

The Buccaneers struck for two in the top of the fifth and added a third run in the top of the seventh, but the Gonzalez homer helped secure the win for ‘Fish, giving PBA their 32nd victory on the year.

Amber Johnson (Win, 14-1) was magnificent in the circle yet again for the Blue and White, pitching five complete while only allowing one earned run. The senior also struck out a pair.

Nikki Brinegar picked up her first save for the ‘Fish, as the southpaw tossed two innings of work, allowing only one earned run and three hits, while striking out a batter.

Bertisch finished 3-3 from the plate today, as the freshman is tied for the team lead in hits with 61. Bertisch is tied with Knight, who finished 1-3.

The 'Fish and Bucs return to action tomorrow, Saturday April 23 for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Palm Beach Atlantic softball will honor their six seniors between the two games.
