Sailfish Spoil Lions Senior Day with Series Sweep

ST. LEO, Fla.- The Sailfish picked up Saturday afternoon right where they left off Friday night, taking it to the No. 4 Saint Leo Lions. Palm Beach Atlantic put together a combined 26 hits and scored 15 runs scored in the two games on the afternoon, sweeping the Lions and spoiling their senior day. The ‘Fish beat the Lions 6-2 in the opener, and 9-2 in the finale. Kayla Knight finished the afternoon with six hits, three in each game, and Ali French delivered a big three-run home run in game two to put the icing on the cake.
The Sailfish return to Simpson Field for their final home weekend series April 22 and 23, as the ‘Fish host the Barry University Buccaneers. Game one will be Friday April 22 at 6 p.m., and the final two will be on Saturday with the first game beginning at 1 p.m.
Game One: PBA 6, SLU 2
Just like the series opener, the top of the sixth inning was when the magic happened for Palm Beach Atlantic in the middle game of the series. The ‘Fish struck for four runs on five hits in the inning, with Victoria Gonzalez delivering the big blow, a 2 RBI double to right field.
The ‘Fish struck first in the top of the second inning as S.J. Collier came in to score on a Brianna Rano ground out. The Lions retaliated in the bottom of the third inning, and took a lead of their own in the bottom of the fifth, taking a 2-1 lead.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the top of the sixth, Brianna Skipper got things going for the ‘Fish with a single to right center. With Kimmi McIntosh pinch-running for Skipper, McIntosh stole second base and advanced on to third a ground out, a passed ball allowed McIntosh to score and tie the game at two runs a piece. Two singles and a walk later, Gonzalez ripped a one-out double to right center field, driving in Bertisch and Knight. Theresa Butler later singled through the left side to bring home Gonzalez, giving the ‘Fish a 5-2 lead. The Sailfish added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as Knight singled home Skipper.
In the circle for the Sailfish in the opener, Rachel Hill pitched four innings of work only allowing two earned runs on four hits. The senior picked up a strike out and didn't walk a batter. Nikki Brinegar (W, 4-4) pitched three shutout innings in relief, allowing just two hits while striking out a pair.
Game Two: PBA 9, SLU 2
The ‘Fish got things going again in the top of the first inning, scoring a run on a sacrifice fly. The Sailfish added their second run of the game in the top of the fourth as Gonzalez doubled home pinch runner Lauren McInness to put the ‘Fish out in front by two.
With two runners on base in the top of the fifth, French blasted a three-run home run over the left center field wall, scoring Knight and Rano to push the ‘Fish out in front 6-0. The home run was the second of the year for the Sailfish first baseman.
The Lions got on the board with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth off of three hits to bring the score to 6-2.
The Sailfish responded with another run in the top of the sixth as Kimmi McIntosh scored on a Knight single, and the Blue and White added two more in the top of the seventh on doubles from Gonzalez and Collier, scoring French and Gonzalez.
Amber Johnson (Win, 14-1) tamed the Lions over seven innings, allowing only two earned runs to score while walking only one batter.
