Softball Shuts Out Sharks in Series Sweep

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla.- The Sailfish picked up a pair of wins Saturday afternoon to complete the sweep over Nova Southeastern University. Senior Theresa Butler crushed a two-run home run in the opener on the day en route to a 13-0 win. The ‘Fish completed the sweep with a 4-0 victory in the final game. Palm Beach Atlantic outscored Nova Southeastern 26-0 and outhit the Sharks 36-13 on the weekend.
The Sailfish (28-15) will return to action next weekend, April 15 and 16 as they head over to take on the No. 4 Saint Leo Lions for a three-game weekend set. Game one of the Saint Leo series is scheduled for 6 p.m. The ‘Fish will return home for one final weekend series April 22 and 23 as they host Barry University.
Game One: PBA 13, NSU 0
The ‘Fish jumped on the board for an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Victoria Gonzales singled through the left side on a 2-2 pitch scoring Maddie Bertisch.
In the top of the third inning, Butler crushed a 1-0 pitch over the center field fence for her second home run on the year, and tenth of her career, driving in two runs giving the ‘Fish a 3-0 lead.
Following a Devin Williams single and Brianna skipper sacrifice bunt, three consecutive singles from Brianna Rano, Kayla Knight, and Bertisch resulted in an additional three runs for the Sailfish in the top of the fourth, giving PBA a 6-0 lead.
The Sailfish busted the game open in the top of the sixth inning as the ‘Fish capitalized on seven hits and one Shark error for seven runs in the inning, taking a 13-0 lead. Butler, Loren Kilgore, and S.J. Collier doubled in the inning, and Bertisch, Gonzalez, and Rano each picked up a single in the long inning.
Rachel Hill (W, 12-7) tossed a complete game shut out, allowing just three hits and one walk, while striking out seven Sharks.
Game Two: PBA 4, NSU 0
The ‘Fish struck first again in the finale, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Gonzalez singled home Knight on a 2-2 base hit to left, and Bertisch later scored on a Sharks defensive miscue.
The Blue and White scored their final two runs of the series in the top of the third inning, extending their lead to 4-0 in the final game. Gonzalez picked up her fifth RBI of the day on a sac fly that scored Knight, and she was followed by an RBI single by Butler that brought home Bertisch.
Amber Johnson (W, 12-1) picked up her second win on the weekend, tossing a complete-game shutout. The senior allowed only five hits while not walking a batter and striking out four.
