GREENVILLE, S.C.- After a grueling three day stretch of tennis matches, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s tennis team is now able to reap the benefit of some well-deserved rest as well as a time of reflection on their season. Part of that reflection includes the naming of a number of student-athletes to the NCCAA All-American listing.
Finishing national runner-up after a classic match against Indiana Wesleyan University, four Sailfish women’s tennis players were awarded at least one All-American award for their overall season performance during 2008.
Highlighting the accomplishments were two freshmen who head coach Chi Ly will be counting on for years to come: Montse Ripoll and Lina Rubiano.
Both playing their first collegiate seasons, Ripoll and Rubiano were both named the NCCAA First-Team All-American team that is voted on by the NCCAA coaches. Ripoll and Rubiano played number one and two singles for the Sailfish for most of the season and responded at the NCCAA National Tournament with a perfect record of 5-0 in both singles and doubles.
For their efforts, both were also named All-Americans in the doubles portion. Rubiano was joined at number one doubles by sophomore Natalie Aleman while Ripoll competed with sophomore Katie Livesay at number two doubles.
Aleman was named a Second-Team NCCAA All-American for her efforts at number three singles for the Fish.
While their ultimate goal may have fell just short in the championship final, the Sailfish women’s tennis team has a lot to be proud of after a season that finished them 14-12 and a second place finish at the NCCAA National Tournament.
