ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- After being narrowly defeated in their first two games on Sunday at the Eckerd College Spring Invitational, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team came back late in the day to win a 1-0 affair with Florida Tech, effectively ending the Panthers hopes for a tournament title.

Sophomore Ashley Jones (Jensen Beach, Fla.) registered her second start of the day after being defeated by the University of Tampa earlier Sunday and responded with a complete-game shutout of the Panthers.

PBA posted a run in the bottom of the first inning to stake the Sailfish and Jones to a lead and never looked back as the Panthers were blanked over the seven inning contest which witnessed Jones allow only five hits while walking only one batter and striking out two.

A dominant right-hander in this just her second season at PBA, Jones earned her fourth win of the season with the victory over FIT against two losses.

Leadoff hitter Casey Gibson (Cape Coral, Fla.) got the scoring started right away for the Fish in the first inning as she singled then stole second-base to put the Fish in business. After an Abbey Shipman (Orlando, Fla.) groundout moved Gibson to third, shortstop Holly Elliot (Orlando, Fla.) did the same which scored Gibson, awarding Elliot with the game’s only RBI.

From that point on, both pitchers tallied zero’s in the scorebook all the way through. Named as the tough luck loser, FIT pitcher Cat McDaniel nearly matched Jones pitch-for-pitch as she held the Sailfish offense to only four hits while striking out for and walking none.

Finishing up with a tournament record of 2-3 with victories over Saint Leo University and Florida Tech, the Fish return to West Palm Beach with an overall record of 10-11. PBA competed in eight games in a four-day span as they also split with #4-ranked Florida Southern College on Thursday evening.

PBA will next travel to Melbourne, Florida for another matchup with Florida Tech as the Fish and Panthers will square off on Tuesday, February 26th for a double-header beginning at 1 pm.
