LAKELAND, Fla. - After a rainout Thursday and a rain-shorted 1-0 win in game one Friday for the Sailfish, Palm Beach Atlantic (21-13) and Florida Southern (11-22-1) finally were able to get games two and three underway Saturday afternoon at Barnett Field on the campus of Florida Southern College, with the Mocs taking the middle game 3-2, and the Sailfish taking the finale 8-0.
Game One: FSC 3 PBA 2
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the third, the Sailfish cut the deficit in half as Kayla Knight scored on a Theresa Butler double to left field.
Maddie Bertisch later tied the game at two runs a piece with a bases loaded single in the top of the fourth, scoring Victoria Boyer.
With the scored tied at two in the bottom of the seventh, a leadoff double from Moccasin’s left fielder Erin Klien set up the game-winning sacrifice fly from first baseman Maggie Roberts, winning the game 3-2 for Florida Southern.
Despite picking up only five hits in the game, the Sailfish shot themselves in the foot offensively stranding 13 runners on base in game one. Bertisch was the only ‘Fish with multiple hits on the day, with Victoria Gonzalez reaching base three times courtesy of the free pass. With the three walks and a line out for Gonzalez, it brings the junior’s hitting streak to an end at 21 games.
In the circle for the ‘Fish, Nikki Brinegar started and pitched two complete, allowing two hits and two earned runs. Amber Johnson (Loss, 8-1) pitched 4.2 innings in relief, allowing four hits and the one run in the seventh.
Game Two: PBA 8 FSC 0
It was not going to take much offense for the Sailfish to pull off the win in the rubber match of the series, as senior pitcher Rachel Hill (Win, 10-6) shut out the Mocs offense over six innings of work, only allowing one Florida Southern record a hit. The Lilburn, Ga. native struck out a pair on her way to the weather-shorted complete game win.
The ‘Fish struck first in the rubber match of the series, jumping on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning on an Ali French double down the left field line, scoring Bertisch.
The Sailfish added two runs in the top of the sixth on back to back one out singles from Knight and Bertisch scoring Boyer and Kimmi McIntosh, and PBA added two more runs on a Gonzalez sacrifice bunt and a Florida Southern error to take a 5-0 lead over the Mocs.
The Blue and White added another three runs in the top of the seventh as Brianna Skipper scored on a two-out single from Bertisch down the left field line, and Gonzalez followed with a single of her own, scoring Bertisch and Knight.
In the top of the seventh inning the weather rolled in and ended the game with the final score of 8-0 in favor of the Sailfish.
The Sailfish return to action Friday, April 1 as they host the University of Tampa for a three-game weekend series. Game one is scheduled for a 6 p.m. first pitch, and games two and three are scheduled for Saturday, April 2 with first pitch of the day scheduled for 1 p.m.
