WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (17-11) fell 4-3 to fellow Sunshine State Conference provisional member Embry-Riddle Friday night at Simpson Field. The loss was the first time this season the ‘Fish dropped the opener of a three-game weekend series.
For most of the night, the Sailfish offense were under control of Eagle’s starting pitcher Kassidy Simmons, (Win, 10-2) who went the distance allowing only three Sailfish hits while picking up four strikeouts.
Embry-Riddle jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, and added two more runs in the top of the fifth to lead 4-0.
The Sailfish were finally able to put runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth, as the ‘Fish scored three runs on two hits and three Eagle errors. Ali French’s RBI double set the tone for the inning, but the ‘Fish fell just short of tying the ballgame, eventually falling 4-3 to the Eagles.
French was 1-3 at the plate on the night, driving in the only earned run for the ‘Fish. Loren Kilgore and Victoria Gonzalez were the other Sailfish to pick up a hit on the night.
In the circle for the Sailfish, Rachel Hill (Loss, 7-6) pitched five innings, allowing eight Eagle hits, and only one earned run. The senior picked up a strike out and did not walk a batter. Nikki Brinegar pitched two innings of relief for the ‘Fish, allowing just three hits and no runs.
The Sailfish and Eagles will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, March 19. The two will face off for a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. at Simpson Field.
