LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Sailfish women’s tennis team defeated a ranked opponent Wednesday for the second consecutive day as they beat the Tritons from UC San Diego 5-4. The Sailfish lost all three doubles matches on the afternoon, but came storming back in singles, taking five of the six matches to win 5-4.
The Sailfish were no match for the Triton’s doubles teams, as Kathi Tesar and Taylor Conti fell 8-3, Maja Jovic and Valerie Nagovitcina lost 8-4, and Michaela Mignemi and Teona Tatishvili were defeated 8-6.
After Tatishvili lost her No. 3 singles match, the Sailfish were down 4-0, and faced an extremely tough task, needing to win the remaining five singles matches against the No. 17 ranked team in the country. Kathi Tesar defeated her opponent to start the comeback, and Mignemi won her match easily, defeating Nousha Nowamooz 6-2, 6-3. All three remaining Sailfish needed three sets to seal their victories.
First Nagovitcina defeated Alexandra Weil 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 to keep the Sailfish alive, then Conti also came back, defeating her opponent 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1. With the match being tied at four apiece, Jovic came through in the clutch, as the junior defeated Monica Yassear in the deciding match 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3.
The win improves the ‘Fish to 6-4, and the Sailfish will again have little rest, as they play #31 ranked Point Loma University tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. local time.
