BOCA RATON, Fla.- After defeating Lynn 1-0 Friday night, Palm Beach Atlantic (13-7) knew they were going to have to wake up their bats Saturday if they were going to pull off a sweep over their cross-county rivals. And that they did, as the ‘Fish picked up 17 hits while scoring 10 runs on the afternoon, defeating Lynn University 5-2 in the first game and 5-3 in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader.
Game One PBA 5 Lynn 2
The Sailfish offense wasted no time in game one, getting on the scoreboard in the top of the first courtesy of an Ali French single to centerfield that drove in Loren Kilgore.
After the Fighting Knights tied things up at one in the bottom of the first, the ‘Fish retook the lead in the top of the second, as Maddie Bertisch reached on a bunt base hit causing a Knight’s throwing error that allowed Brianna Rano to come around and score from second base.
A Victoria Rios solo home run down the left field line in the bottom of the third tied things up yet again, but the resilient Sailfish would respond in the top of the fourth, as Kayla Knight singled to left field, driving in Rano and putting the ‘Fish back on top 3-2.
PBA would add an insurance run in the top of the fifth inning as pinch hitter Olivia Silver singled to left field driving in Victoria Gonzalez, and again in the top of the seventh as Rano brought in Gonzalez on a sacrifice bunt.
Nikki Brinegar (Win, 2-2) pitched five solid innings, only allowing two earned runs, while striking out three Fighting Knights. The Southpaw faced 20 batters, only allowing five to reach base; four hits and one walk.
Amber Johnson picked up her second save in as many days for the ‘Fish, slamming the door shut in the final two innings, allowing no hits, one walk, and striking out three.
Game Two PBA 5 Lynn 3
The Sailfish picked up right where they left off in game one of the day, jumping on the board with a run in the top of the first as Knight drew a walk and later scored on a Gonzalez single.
The Fighting Knights answered in the bottom of the first as Francais Olexa hit a two-run wall scraping home run to center to put the Knights in front 2-1. Lynn would lead until the top of the third when Gonzalez singled home Knight for the second time of the game to tie things up at two runs a piece.
Lynn would retake the lead in the bottom of the fourth capitalizing on a Sailfish error and a sacrifice fly, jumping out in front 3-2. The ‘Fish responded in the top of the fifth when French drove in a run on a fielder’s choice, scoring Silver to tie the game up yet again.
The ‘Fish would jump out in front in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs on one hit and two Lynn errors. Knight sparked the inning singling through the right side, and advanced to second on a Silver groundout to third. Brianna Skipper reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, advancing Knight to third. Following a Gonzalez walk to load the bases, French reached on a fielder’s choice in the infield that drove in Knight to put the ‘Fish out in front 4-3. Rano followed suit reaching on a fielder’s choice that drove in Skipper, giving the Sailfish a 5-3 lead, the final score of the game.
Johnson (Win, 5-0) came out of the bullpen for the blue and white for the second time on the day. The senior pitched five complete innings allowing only two hits and one unearned run, while picking up two strikeouts.
The Sailfish now have won twelve in a row, and will be back in action Monday, March 7 at Simpson Field as they ‘Fish host West Liberty University in a doubleheader with game one scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
