BOCA RATON, Fla.- It took all of one swing of the bat to settle things Friday afternoon between Palm Beach Atlantic and Lynn University at the Lynn Softball Field on the campus of Lynn University in Boca Raton. In the top of the fourth inning, Sailfish junior Victoria Gonzalez blasted an 0-1 pitch over the right centerfield wall to give the ‘Fish the only run needed for the 1-0 victory. The win was the tenth in a row for the Sailfish, and lifts PBA to 11-7, and dropping the Fighting Knights to 8-12-1 on the year.
Following the Gonzo homer, the Fighting Knights threatened in the bottom half of the inning when their first two batters reached second and third base, but the Sailfish defense would prevail. The third batter of the inning for the Knights popped up to ‘Fish second baseman Theresa Butler for the first out. The following batter dropped a suicide squeeze attempt, but freshman third baseman Maddie Bertisch fielded it perfectly and fired a strike to catcher Brianna Skipper who applied the tag on the runner at the plate, conserving the 1-0 Sailfish lead. Sailfish starting pitcher Rachel Hill got the next batter of the inning to ground out to Butler, ending the inning Fighting Knights threat.
Hill (Win, 5-4) had another great outing for the blue and white, allowing only four hits in 5.1 innings of work. The senior also struck out a batter, bringing her to a team-leading 38 on the season.
The Sailfish all-time saves leader Amber Johnson picked up another save Friday afternoon, pitching a perfect 1.2 innings in relief to shut the door for the ‘Fish.
Gonzalez finished with two hits, and was joined by Ali French and Brianna Rano with a multi-hit day.
The Sailfish return to Boca Raton Saturday, March 5 for a doubleheader against the Knights at Lynn Softball Field, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
