MARION, Ind.- After traveling nearly 2,000 miles to central Indiana, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s tennis team got things moving in the right direction with a strong opening game statement at the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) tennis championships that began Tuesday afternoon. The Sailfish overtook host Indiana Wesleyan University by a score of 5-1.
Known as a NCCAA and NAIA power in women’s tennis, IWU was unable to slow down the strong start by PBA in doubles as the Sailfish took two of the three sets including commanding 8-3 and 8-4 victories at number one and two respectively.
Freshmen sensations Montse Ripoll and Lina Rubiano, PBA’s two top players entering the postseason tournament proved their worth once again as they cruised to victories over IWU’s Sarah Bauss and Julia Hedgebeth. Ripoll took down Bauss 6-0, 6-1 while Rubiano appeared just as dominant with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Hedgebeth.
Sophomore Natalie Aleman, who paired with Rubiano in a 8-3 number one doubles victory, clinched the match for PBA with a come from behind effort over Wildcats player Eva Delk. Aleman dropped the opening set 2-6, but regained her poise and composure to fight back for a 6-4, 6-0 victory.
Ripoll and sophomore captain Katie Livesay combined for PBA’s other doubles victory with an 8-4 victory at number two doubles over the likes of Delk and Lisa Massey.
IWU’s Courtney Kooyers and Laura Helm overtook Krishna Domenech and Kelly Schwartz of PBA for IWU’s only win.
PBA will return to the courts this evening with a 6 pm match slated against North Greenville University as PBA continues their march through the NCCAA National Tennis Championships.
