Sailfish Fall on Senior Day to Rollins

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – After falling behind by 22 in the second quarter the Palm Beach Atlantic women’s basketball team made a furious second half rally but ultimately fell just short, losing 82-81 to Rollins College in the season finale.
The Sailfish (13-13) jumped out to an eight point lead in the first quarter as PBA started their four seniors: Janelle Cannon, Mallory Motycka, Latrice Coleman and Nina Krstic. After going ahead 12-4 on a pair of free throws by Ayanna Holmes, the Sailfish saw Rollins go on a 16-2 run to take a 20-14 lead.
The Tars (0-0) lead grew to 22 in the second quarter before leading 49-32 at the break. The Sailfish scored 30 points in the third quarter as they cut the lead down to two at 64-62. Rollins pushed the lead out to 10 again in the fourth but the ‘Fish again rallied to score 12 of the next 16 points to pull within two at 79-77 on a pair of free throws by Cannon with 24 seconds left.
Cannon stole the next possession for Rollins and was fouled, making one of two at the line. After Rollins made two free throws to push the lead back out to three the Sailfish turned the ball over on their next possession. Rollins’ Vernisha Andrews made one of two free throws to put the lead out to four with just three seconds remaining. Hannah Grim made a three from just inside half court as time expired for PBA.
Cannon finished with a game-high 28 points, including 10 in the first quarter. She made 10-of-13 from the free throw line and 9-of-19 from the field. She also grabbed 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season and led the team with four assists.
Ayanna Holmes also posted a double-double, her fifth this season, with 25 points and a game-high 13 boards. Holmes made 9-of-17 from the floor and 7-of-11 from the free throw line. Hannah Grim was also in double figures with 19 points, making both of the team’s three point field goals. Grim led the team with five steals as the team tallied 13.
Both teams made 23 free throws as the teams combined to take 60 in the game. Rollins pulled down 48 rebounds to outpace the Sailfish by seven.
The Sailfish wrap up the year with 13 wins which is tied for the most in a season during the NCAA Division II era. The final record of 13-13 is the first time the team has finished at .500 or better during the same time period.
