'Fish Rally Late to Defeat Eckerd 2-1

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Trailing 1-0 as they were heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Sailfish rallied for two runs to give the ‘Fish a 2-1 lead in which they held on to for the victory. With the win, the Palm Beach Atlantic softball team advances to 6-7 on the year, and the Eckerd College Tritons fall to 9-3-1.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Maddie Bertisch got things started for the ‘Fish a four pitch walk, and advanced to second base courtesy a Devin Williams single up the middle. Kayla Knight followed suit with a single of her own to centerfield to load the bases with one away. Victoria Boyer connected on an 0-1 pitch for a ground ball up the middle, reaching on a fielder’s choice and driving in Bertisch to tie the game. With two outs and runners on the corners, Victoria Gonzalez ripped a 2-0 pitch to centerfield to drive in Williams, giving the ‘Fish the 2-1 advantage.
The Tritons struck first in the top of the third on a Chelsea Armstrong double to left field, and the 1-0 lead would hold until the bottom of the sixth.
The Sailfish were held without a hit until the fifth inning Friday night, as the Triton’s freshman pitcher Nikole Van Gennep (Loss, 5-3) was perfect through 4.1 innings. Van Gennep pitched six complete innings, allowing just five Sailfish hits and two runs on the night.
Rachel Hill (Win, 2-4) was as equally dominant in the circle, allowing only six hits and one earned run in seven innings of work, while striking out five Tritons.
The Sailfish and Tritons return to Simpson Field, tomorrow, Saturday Feb. 27 for a doubleheader to complete games two and three of their weekend series.
