Sailfish Fall for Third Straight Time, Lose to Panthers 94-79

MELBOURNE, Fla.- The Sailfish men’s basketball team dropped their third consecutive game Wednesday night, falling to the Florida Tech Panthers (14-14) 94-79. With the loss, Palm Beach Atlantic (12-13) falls below the .500 mark for the first time since early December.
The Sailfish opened the game on fire, jumping out to a quick seven-point advantage in the opening three minutes. Despite being outshot from the field 46.4 percent to 34.3 percent. The ‘Fish would lead the Panthers the entire first half, and took a 10-point lead into the half thanks to seven first-half three-pointers. Milos Kostic hit three-of-six from downtown in the opening half, and Michael Simpson, Malek Barber, Derick Yepes, and Bakari Warthen each connected once from distance in the half.
The second half of Wednesday night’s game in Melbourne was the difference maker, as the ‘Fish were outscored 59-34. The Sailfish’s dismal 34.3 percent from the field in the first half decreased in the second half by two percent, but the ‘Fish fell flat from behind the arc, only connecting on two of eleven attempts.
The Panthers on the other hand, absolutely lit it up in the final twenty minutes, as Florida Tech connected on 61.8 percent of their shots from the field, including knocking down 10 three-pointers en route to their 59 point second half performance.
Shavanno Cooper led the Sailfish offensively on the night, as the junior picked up his first double-double on the year; finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Malek Barber tied his career high with 20 points scored on the evening, his second time hitting the 20-point mark. The freshman also grabbed six rebounds and three steals.
Milos Kostic finished with 14 points, his ninth time this season finishing in double-figures. The sophomore snagged four boards and dished out an assist.
The Panthers were led offensively by Patrick Anderson and Corbin Jackson, as they scored 23 and 18 points, respectively.
The ‘Fish will conclude their regular season next Saturday, Feb. 27 in the Rubin Arena. The Sailfish will honor their four seniors, Nigel Sydnor, Michael Simpson, Derick Yepes, and Giles Chapman, as they host Rollins College at 4:00 p.m.
