BABSON PARK, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University baseball team jumped out to an early lead on Friday evening but were unable to hold off the charging Webber International team as WIU overtook the Sailfish by a final score of 6-5.
Leading 2-0 after five innings of play, Sailfish starter Peter Rodriguez ran into some trouble as the freshman was tagged for four runs in the sixth inning before giving way to the PBA bullpen. PBA would momentarily regain the lead as they pushed three runs of their own across in the top of the seventh before once again relinquishing the advantage as WIU scored a run in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings to earn the victory.
Once again showing signs of a future staff ace, Rodriguez was solid through five innings before running into his sixth inning woes. His final line included 5 2/3 innings pitched while giving up four runs (three earned), walking five and striking out five.
Freshman Brett Hammann relieved for the Fish and tallied an inning and a third, giving up two hits and one earned run. Junior relief specialist Oscar Cuevas was tagged with the loss, his first of the season, after giving up a run in the eighth inning.
Seniors Mariano Jimenez and Zach Grau led the way for Palm Beach Atlantic as they each collected two hits while junior Joaquin Valdes added in a hit and three runs batted in.
