'Fish Climb to .500 with Win Over Saint Leo

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic was 3-9 after a loss at Saint Leo on Jan. 2 and have won nine of 12 since to climb back to .500 after a 68-56 victory on Wednesday night against the Lions. Janelle Cannon flirted with a triple double as the Sailfish built a 23-point lead in the second half.
The game was tied at 13-13 after the first ten minutes but Nkiru Anyagaligbo scored 10 of her 18 in the second quarter as the ‘Fish used a 15-5 run in the first 5:49 of the second quarter to push the lead out to double digits for the first time at 28-18.
After the Lions (5-19) cut the lead to five early in the second half, PBA (12-12) scored the next 15 points to grab a 20-point lead with 3:22 left in the third. Hannah Grim scored eight straight during the run and finished with 16 in the game. The sophomore hit 7-of-10 from the floor and swiped five steals.
Janelle Cannon added eight assists to go with her 16 points and seven rebounds. The senior scored or assisted on 12 of the team’s 25 made field goals and also made 8-of-10 from the free throw line. The ‘Fish made 17-of-28 at the stripe as the Lions made just 8-of-16.
The Sailfish outscored the Lions 42-25 in the second and third quarters as they built their lead. PBA made 41.4 percent from the floor in the first half despite making just 3-of-9 in the first quarter. During the second and third quarters the ‘Fish made 17-of-33 from the floor while the Lions made 10-of-22 but turned the ball over 19 times during the stretch. Saint Leo turned the ball over 29 times in the game. The ‘Fish gave it away 17 times.
PBA has never finished a season at .500 or better during the Division II era and will match the most wins in a season during the time with one more. The ‘Fish get the weekend off before returning to action at Florida Tech on Feb. 24 and return to Rubin Arena for the final time this season on Feb. 27 against Rollins.
