Second Quarter Surge Lifts 'Fish Past Spartans

TAMPA, Fla. – A 20-0 run in the second quarter led the Sailfish to a 67-61 victory over the University of Tampa on Saturday afternoon, pulling the ‘Fish to within one game of .500 on the season.
PBA turned a 27-15 deficit in the second quarter into a 35-27 lead with 2:06 to play before halftime as six players scored during the run. The ‘Fish shot 48.4 percent in the first half and had four players score at least six points. Janelle Cannon and Nina Krstic both scored seven points in the opening 20 minutes.
Cannon and Nkiru Anyagaligbo both scored 14 points in the game with Cannon adding nine boards and five assists. PBA had 17 assists on 29 made field goals, shooting 47.5 percent in the game. The Spartans (13-11) shot just 40.4 percent overall but made 10 triples led by Juliana Cavallaro who made five.
The ‘Fish pushed their lead to 11 midway through the third quarter and led by nine at the end of the quarter. Tampa cut the lead down to four with 7:22 to play but Hannah Grim hit a trey 11 seconds later to give the ‘Fish a three possession lead. A jumper by Cannon with three minutes to play pushed the lead back out to nine but Tampa’s Cavallaro hit a pair of threes to cut the lead back to three with 1:08 to play.
Anyagaligbo scored on a put back on the next Sailfish possession and Grim knocked down a free throw as the ‘Fish sealed the road victory. Grim finished with nine points and three assists. Krstic finished with 11 points as Ayanna Holmes added a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
PBA will return to Rubin Arena on Wednesday to host Saint Leo at 5:30 p.m., one of two remaining home games this season. The Lions defeated the ‘Fish 66-53 back on Jan. 2 before the ‘Fish ripped off five straight wins.
