CLEVELAND, Miss. – Phil DiLandro entered the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with runners on first and second base and the ‘Fish already trailing 4-2. The senior southpaw got back to back groundballs, the first one being a 6-4-3 double play, to keep the Sailfish within striking distance.
After scoring one in the seventh to come within one run, a Peter Rivera 2-run homerun in the top of the eighth inning put PBA on top 5-4, and that was all the ‘Fish needed. DiLandro (Win, 1-0) worked 3.1 scoreless innings out of the pen, not allowing a hit and only allowing two base runners. DiLandro handed the ball over to fellow senior Dominic Monda with one out in the ninth, and Monda recorded the final two outs, allowing a single between outs to record his second save of the season, lowering his ERA to 0.73.
Senior Eric Russell received the ball for the ‘Fish in the rubber match, working into the sixth, striking out two, and allowing four earned runs. Dalton Moats started for the Statesman, working into the eighth inning and was lifted after the Rivera blast. Moats scattered seven Sailfish hits and struck out six.
Seven Sailfish finished with a hit Saturday, as nobody collected multiple hits. Mac Hessney, Julian Bilodeau, and Hakeem Rhodes all had RBI singles in the afternoon matinee. Bilodeau improves his team leading batting average to .400.
The Sailfish return home with a 6-5 record, and will have a week off before returning to Rubin Park to host St. Thomas University in a weekend set. Friday’s first pitch is set for 6 p.m.
