Sailfish Defeat Lynn 71-63 to Tie School Record

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- On Wednesday night the Palm Beach Atlantic men’s basketball team tied their single-season mark in wins since joining the NCAA Division II in 2007 with 12. The Sailfish (12-10) held off the cross-county rivals by a final score of 71-63.
The Sailfish were without leading scorer Bakari Warthen on the night, but were picked up by veteran leaders on the night. Milos Kostic, Nigel Sydnor, and Michael Simpson led the way for the blue and white, each finishing above the double-digit scoring mark.
The game opened up in favor of the Sailfish as the blue and white quickly jumped out to an early 13-4 advantage in the opening seven minutes of play. The Sailfish defense held the Knights to under ten points as a team until the 9:53 mark in the opening period. The Fighting Knights were never far out of contention, but with every Lynn basket, the Sailfish were there with one of their own, and the Sailfish too a 33-27 lead into halftime.
The second half remained all Sailfish as the Fighting Knights would fail to tie or take the lead at any point in the remainder of the game. Lynn would bring the score within a bucket at the 11:16 mark, but a Michael Simpson fast break three-pointer four seconds later would send momentum back in favor of the blue and white. With three minutes left and the ‘Fish leading by three, a Shavanno Cooper dunk later followed by a Milos Kostic three-pointer would seal the deal for the Sailfish, eventually bringing the final score to 71-63 Palm Beach Atlantic.
Milos Kostic, the sophomore from Belgrade, Serbia, finished the night with 15 points on five-of-eight from the field, including four three-pointers.
Michael Simpson ended his night on three-of-three from distance, which were nine of his 13 points on the night. The senior from Spring, Texas shot four-of-nine from the field, three-of-five from distance.
Nigel Sydnor finished with an even 10 points, connecting on four-of-eight from the field. The senior from Baltimore, Md. also grabbed five rebounds and dished our four assists on the night.
Shavanno Cooper finished night grabbing 12 rebounds and scoring eight points.
The Sailfish out-shot the Fighting Knights from the field 42.2 percent to 32.4 percent, from distance 43.8 percent to 13 percent, and from the charity stripe 52.6 percent to 51.6 percent on the night.
Lynn was led offensively by Fred Landers, who finished with 22 points and nine rebounds.
Palm Beach Atlantic will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 13 as they travel to Tampa, Fla. to take on the University of Tampa Spartans, wit ha scheduled tipoff of 4:00 p.m.
