GREENVILLE, S.C.- After a long trip through the NCCAA Softball Championships this past week, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team received their fair share of honors. Beyond a second-place plaque for their remarkable trip through the NCCAA tournament, eight players were honored for their efforts on and off the field.

Sophomores Ashley Jones and Heather Laird along with freshman Caitlin Bouschet headlined this year’s award winners as the underclassman trio were each named 2008 NCCAA All-Americans for their performances throughout the season. Sophomore Chelsea Gravini joined the impressive list as a NCCAA All-American Honorable Mention.

Jones closed out her second season in a Sailfish uniform with staggering numbers which included but were not limited to a 17-10 record, a 1.03 earned run average, 205 strikeouts, while limiting opposing batters to just a .205 batting average in 183 innings pitched. The Jensen Beach High School product has proven to be worthy of the tag of “ace” in her two seasons as a Sailfish.

Joining Jones on the NCCAA All-American team is first-year PBA hurler Heather Laird. While considered by most to be PBA’s number two starter, Laird has proven she can pitch against anyone as she recently went 2-0 in the NCCAA National Tournament. Laird closed out her season with a 12-7 record while posting a 1.84 ERA and 88 strikeouts in just under 130 innings pitched.

Helping aide both Jones and Laird on defense and in the middle of the Sailfish lineup has been the solid and sometimes spectacular play of freshman shortstop Caitlin Bouschet. A local product out of Lake Worth, Florida, Bouschet has shown a steady glove, a cannon for an arm, and the ability to hit to all fields.

An athletic and strongly built shortstop, Bouschet led the Sailfish in nearly all major offensive categories this season including a .386 batting average, 12 doubles, 32 runs batted in, and a .500 on-base-percentage. PBA head coach Kimmy Bloemers will be looking for even greater things from Bouschet in the coming years.

In her second season, Chelsea Gravini made the transition from a slapping, speed-based player to one who could not only hit the ball out of the ballpark but also drive in runs with her sweet left-handed stroke. Gravini finished second on the team with three homeruns, 25 runs batted, while leading the squad with three triples.

Four other PBA players were honored by the NCCAA for their accomplishments in the classroom by being named NCCAA Scholar-Athletes. Seniors Melissa Wallach (Applied Finance and Accounting) and Andrea Fugate (International Business) were joined by juniors Rebecca Bolinger (Communications) and Jordan Laria (Physical Education) on the list.

Athletes must be at least a junior or senior with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.4.

Below is a list of all the other NCCAA All-Americans as well as the NCCAA Scholar Athlete Listing and All-Tournament Team.
