CLEARWATER, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish softball team wrapped up the Eckerd College Spring Invitational not how they forecasted it, losing to Chadron State College 2-1 in extra innings. With the loss, the Sailfish are now 1-6 on the early season. The last time PBA started 1-6 they finished with 33 wins back in 2008.
Sunday afternoon’s contest required extra innings before anyone decided to score, as Kimmi McIntosh became the first run of the ballgame in the top of the eighth inning, as she stole third and was driven in by Brianna Skipper a few pitches later. The Sailfish 1-0 lead through seven and a half would not hold, as the Eagles plated two runners in the bottom of the eighth to win 2-1.
Nikki Brinegar (1-1) pitched six innings on the afternoon, and held the Eagles without a hit through five. Brinegar’s outing was finished in the seventh as she let up only her second hit of the afternoon. The southpaw was replaced by senior Rachel Hill (L, 0-4).
The top two batters in the batting order for the Sailfish had the bats swinging well today, as Kayla Knight and Maddie Bertisch combined for five of the eight Sailfish hits on the day.
The Sailfish head back home and will host Armstrong Atlantic State University Friday, Feb 12 at 7 p.m. in day one of the Sailfish Showdown.
