LAKELAND, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic men’s basketball team (11-9) fell short in their attempt to sweep the defending National Champions Florida Southern Moccasins on the year. The Mocs, aided by their 17 made three-pointers, defeated the ‘Fish 91-77 Wednesday night in the George Jenkins Field House.
Momentum swung in the direction of the Mocs as the game got underway, with the defending national champs quickly jumping out to a nine-point lead with 12:59 on the clock. Their lead would not hold, as the freshman duo of Malek Barber and Bakari Warthen combined for seven unanswered points and were capped off by a Lucas Morales three-pointer to give the ‘Fish their first lead of the game just fifty-seven seconds later. Morales wasn’t the only one hitting from distance, as both clubs combined for 10 made three-pointers in the final 12 minutes of the first half, setting up the halftime score of 46-44 in favor of the Mocs.
The second half opened up in similar fashion to the first, in full favor of the Mocs. Florida Southern quickly turned their two-point lead at the half into a nine-point lead within three minutes of returning to action, and things escalated quickly as the Moccasin lead spread to 19 with 8:49 left in regulation, a lead far too insurmountable for the Sailfish to make a comeback.
Palm Beach Atlantic freshman Malek Barber and Bakari Warthen were the only ‘Fish to score in double-figures on the night, as Warthen finished with 16 and Barber with 11.
Shavanno Cooper grabbed 16 rebounds on the night, a personal best, and the individual single-game high for the team this season.
For Florida Southern, five of their six players who scored on the night, finished in double figures. The Mocs were led by Dyllan Travis, who finished with 28 points on the night. FSC finished 17-of-38 from distance, versus the Sailfish 8-for-24 performance.
The Sailfish are back in action Saturday, Feb. 6 as the ‘Fish head south to Miami Shores to take on Barry University, with tipoff scheduled for 5 p.m.
