WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – After a tough loss on Wednesday to snap a five-game winning streak, the Palm Beach Atlantic women’s basketball team bounced back to pick up an 88-73 win over No. 12 Nova Southeastern on Saturday afternoon in Rubin Arena.
The ‘Fish were led by three players with 20 or more points, the first time this season the Sailfish can make that claim. Janelle Cannon led all players with 29 points, 13 rebounds and six assists. Hannah Grim added 22 points and Ayanna Holmes had 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Cannon came out on fire in the first quarter, scoring 12 points in the first quarter but the ‘Fish trailed 28-24 after the first 10 minutes. PBA (9-10) turned the tide in the second quarter, holding the Sharks to just nine points in the quarter as they took a 49-37 lead at halftime. Nkiru Anyagaligbo scored eight of her 10 points in the second quarter. She also grabbed nine rebounds as the ‘Fish dominated the glass 42-31.
The Sharks fought back in the third, closing the gap to four at the end of the quarter but the ‘Fish again pulled away in the fourth. Cannon scored 10 in the final period as the ‘Fish opened the quarter on a 9-3 run to push the lead back out to double digits. Moments later the Sailfish started a 11-1 run capped on a layup by Grim as the ‘Fish put the game out of reach.
Grim knocked down both treys for the ‘Fish in the game and shot 8-of-19 for the game. Cannon cooled off in the second half but still made 12 of her 22 attempts from the floor. Holmes nearly didn’t miss, making 10-of-13 overall.
The Sailfish shot 56.9 percent from the floor in the game while holding Nova to 40.6 percent. PBA scored 66 of their points in the paint, spending most of the game pushing the tempo and driving to the lane. The Sailfish added 22 fast break points to just four for the Sharks.
Nova stayed in the game thanks in large part to their shooting. The Sharks hit 10-of-31 overall from beyond the arc led by Taylor Buie’s 8-of-13 shooting. Buie finished with a team-high 24 points. Kayla Wright added 23 points and 13 boards for the Sharks.
PBA will be in action again on Wednesday at Florida Southern at 5:30 p.m. The Mocs picked up a 60-55 win over the Sailfish back in November. FSC is currently ranked No. 24 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
