WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Playing in front of their own fellow students for the first time in over a month, the Palm Beach Atlantic men’s basketball (11-7) team did not let their classmates head back to their dorms disappointed, as the ‘Fish defeated Embry-Riddle(11-7) 72-66 Wednesday night.
The first half started off slow for both squads, as both teams shot less than 32-percent over the first eight minutes of play. The pace picked up in the remaining twelve minutes of the opening half, as the lead changed on five separate occasions. Senior Nigel Sydnor only scored three points in the first twenty minutes of action, but his buzzer-beating three-pointer sent the Sailfish faithful into a frenzy, and sent both teams to their lockerooms with the ‘Fish leading 27-26.
The second half picked up right back where the opening half let off, and saw several lead changes over the first five minutes of play. The ‘Fish regained a 41-40 lead at the 14:29 mark courtesy of a Bakari Warthen bucket in the paint. The lead would hold for PBA, and eventually grow to a gap as large as 13 in favor of the blue and white. The Eagles were able to bring things as close as a bucket with less than thirty seconds to play, but the ‘Fish held on for the 72-66 victory.
Shavanno Cooper led the Sailfish offensively on the night, as the junior hit five-of-six from the field, and hit his only attempt from distance for 14 points. The Freeport, Bahamas native also snagged seven rebounds and two steals.
Bakari Warthen also finished the night with 14 points, with 12 of them coming in the second half. Warthen was a perfect six-for-six from the charity stripe, and grabbed three rebounds as well.
Malek Barber finished with a lucky 13 points on the evening, knocking down four-of-ten from the field, and five-of-six from the free-throw line. The freshman from North Port, Fla. also grabbed two boards, dished out two assists, and snagged two steals.
Lucas Morales led the ‘Fish with nine boards on the night, and Derick Yepes dished out five assists to go along with his nine points.
The Eagles had three players reach double-figures in scoring, and were led by Ognjen Milijkovic’s 17 points and seven rebounds.
The Sailfish go for win number twelve on the year Saturday afternoon, Jan. 30 in the Rubin Arena as the ‘Fish look to avenge their Dec. 2 loss to Nova Southeastern. The Sailfish and Sharks are slated for a 4 p.m. tipoff.
