ST. LEO, FLA.- The Palm Beach Atlantic men’s basketball team opened their 2016 portion of the schedule with a back and forth 92-87 loss to Saint Leo Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the ‘Fish now sit at 6-6 on the year.
A game that saw 21 lead changes and 11 tie scores unfortunately did not end the way the ‘Fish would have hoped for to open up the second half of the season. The Sailfish and Lions were all squared up at 82 with just 3:05 left to play before the Lions scored seven unanswered points to spread the gap with 1:23 left in the game. A Michael Simpson three-pointer from the corner with 21 seconds left brought the ‘Fish within three points at 90-87, but the Lions were able to knock down two free throws to seal the deal in the Bowman Center.
The Sailfish opened up the contest shooting 47.5 percent (19-of-40) from the field and were led by Shavanno Cooper and Bakari Warthen who each scored 10 points a piece in the opening half.
Malek Barber had a strong second half showing, scoring 11 of his 14 points in the closing half. Bakari Warthen matched his first half performance scoring another 10 points in the second half to finish his day with 20 points, the fifth time this season Warthen has reached that mark.
Joining Barber and Warthen in double-figures on the afternoon were Milos Kostic, Shavanno Cooper, and Michael Simpson. Kostic finished with 10 points and five rebounds, Cooper scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and Simpson ended the day with 12 points.
The Sailfish finished the afternoon shooting 48 percent (36-of-75) from the field, and 41.2 percent from long range, knocking down 7-of-17 attempts.
The Lions were led offensively by Marcus Dewberry who finished with 27 points, and Carter Belling who finished with 18 on the afternoon.
The Sailfish will be back in action next Saturday, Jan. 9 in the Rubin Arena as the ‘Fish host the Florida Tech Panthers starting at 4 p.m.
