Sailfish Drop Road Contest to Start 2016

ST. LEO, Fla. – A second half rally was stifled on Saturday as Palm Beach Atlantic dropped their first contest of 2016, falling 66-53 to Saint Leo.
After scoring just 17 points in the first half and trailing by 16 at the break, the Sailfish (3-9) came out firing in the second half. The ‘Fish outscored the Lions (4-8) 13-5 in the third and pulled within six twice, first on a layup by Hannah Grim with 2:12 to play and again a minute later on a bucket by Nikru Anyagligbo.
The Lions scored the final bucket of the third quarter which started an 11-0 run for Saint Leo. The ‘Fish hit five triples in the final quarter but were unable to get closer than nine after the Lions’ initial surge. Grim scored 11 of her team-high 15 points in the fourth quarter including all three of her treys.
Janelle Cannon posted her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds and also led the team with five assists. The senior guard scored eight points in the first half, making 2-of-3 from the floor and all four free throws. Anyagligbo added 11 points and seven rebounds while Ayanna Holmes added eight points and eight rebounds.
The Sailfish shot just 29.9 percent from the floor, making 20-of-67 from the floor and 6-of-23 from beyond the arc. The Lions made 40.4 percent from the field, hitting 21-of-52 and were led by Chelsy Springs’ game-high 23 points. Mary Redmond hit 4-of-8 from beyond the arc and finished with 17 points as the Lions connected on 5-of-13 from long range.
PBA returns to action at Rubin Arena next Saturday, Jan. 9 against Florida Tech. Tip time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
