Warthen and Yepes Combine for 46 in Win Over Tigers

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic men’s basketball team closed out the first half of the season on a high note Thursday night as they defeated the Benedict College Tigers 97-90 in the Rubin Arena. With the win, the ‘Fish are now 6-5 on the year.
The Sailfish jumped out to a 47-30 lead over the Tigers in the opening half as the ‘Fish shot fifty percent knocking down 15-of-30 from the field. The Sailfish lead was also aided by a perfect five-for-five at the charity stripe from senior Michael Simpson who capitalized on three Tiger technical fouls in the half.
The Tigers were able to claw their way back into the game in the second half, eventually tying things up at 77 with 4:17 left in regulation. The Sailfish were able to regain the lead in the closing minutes, capitalizing on several consecutive missed opportunities for Benedict. Derick Yepes put up an impressive second half for the blue and white, scoring 17 points, connecting on three-of-six from the field, and knocking down 11-of-12 at the charity stripe.
Five Sailfish finished the night scoring double-figures. Freshman Bakari Warthen led the way scoring 26 points on the night, knocking down 11-of-20 from the field while connecting on 3-of-6 from distance. After opening the first half with only three points, Derick Yepes put up an impressive second-half, finishing with a career-high 20 points on the evening. Yepes shot 12-of-13 at the free throw line.
Michael Simpson added another two made free throws in two attempts in the second half, to keep him a perfect seven-of-seven on the evening. The senior from Spring, Texas finished with 12 points. Freshman Malek Barber connected on four-of-seven from the field, and added three free throws to finish with 11 points, and sophomore Milos Kostic connected on three-of-six from downtown and added a made free throw to finish with an even 10 points.
The Tigers had five players score in double-figures on the night, and were led by Jordan Smith’s 17.
The Sailfish will return to action in the new year, as the ‘Fish travel to St. Leo, Fla. to take on Saint Leo University on Saturday, Jan. 2 at 4 p.m. PBA returns to the Rubin Arena a week later to host Florida Tech on Jan. 9, beginning at 4 p.m.
