Cannon's 27 Not Enough Against No. 24 Benedict

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – An early second half run doomed the Sailfish on Thursday night against Benedict College as the ‘Fish fell 64-56 to the No. 24-ranked Tigers.
The ‘Fish (3-8) trailed by just two at halftime after the teams were even at 11-11 after the first period. Neither team shot well in the first half as the teams went into the break under 30 percent. The Sailfish managed just six made field goals but made up for that with 12 made free throws. Janelle Cannon led all players with 10 points in the first 20 minutes and finished the game with a game-high 27.
Early in the second half the Sailfish cut the deficit down to one at 30-31 after the Tigers (8-1) jumped out to a six-point lead. Cannon’s jumper with 6:56 to go brought the ‘Fish to within one but the Tigers responded with a 12-0 run to take a 43-30 lead midway through the quarter. The Sailfish made another run late in the fourth to cut the lead back to four at 60-56 with 42 seconds left but Benedict hit their final five free throws to seal the win.
The Sailfish had a decided advantage at the charity stripe, taking 32 free throw attempts with 22 coming from Cannon. The senior finished 15-of-22 at the line and 6-of-11 from the floor. The Tigers attempted just 20 free throws, making 15. Cannon also led the team with six rebounds.
Hannah Grim joined Cannon in double figures with 13 points on 4-of-12 shooting. All four made field goals came from beyond the arc and accounted for all four of the team’s treys.
The Sailfish finished the game shooting 29.4 percent as the Tigers improved their first half numbers to shoot 32.8 percent for the game. Regime McCombs knocked down four from long range and led the team with 16 points. Destiny Betts was also in double figures with 14 points. Terri Jacobs led all players with 16 rebounds. The Tigers outrebounded the ‘Fish 53-33.
The Sailfish will be back in action in 2016, heading to Saint Leo on Saturday, Jan. 2 to battle the Lions. The ‘Fish return to Rubin Arena the next week, Jan. 9, to host Florida Tech.
