Sailfish Storm Back to Defeat Washburn 60-53

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic limited Washburn to just 21 second half points and held the Ichabods scoreless over the final 3:38 to secure their first win of the season on Saturday, 60-53. Nina Krstic led the ‘Fish with 22 points and six rebounds.
The Sailfish (1-5) were finally able to breakthrough into the win column after losing their last four games by a total of 21 points. Krstic knocked down four from beyond the arc to produce her second-straight 20-point game. The senior has led or tied for the team lead in points four times this season.
After leading by nine at halftime the Ichabods (4-2) quickly pushed the lead to its largest margin at 11 early in the third quarter but the ‘Fish outscored Washburn 16-6 over the final 6:31 of the quarter to pull even at 41-41 heading to the fourth. Krstic scored four points during the run as did Hannah Grim and Darsan DeShazier. Grim finished the game with 10 points.
The ‘Fish took their first lead of the fourth quarter on a jumper from Ayanna Holmes with 3:58 to play as PBA took a 51-50 lead. Washburn answered on the next possession as Haley Pfau connected on a triple to give the Ichabods a 53-51 lead, but Washburn missed their final four shots including three from deep to end the game. Krstic made a three on the next possession for the Sailfish as they gained the lead for the final time.
Ayanna Holmes knocked down a pair of free throws and Darsan DeShazier hit a jumper that helped seal the victory for the ‘Fish. Holmes added another bucket as time expired to finish with seven points and also led the team with seven rebounds. DeShazier scored 11 points as Kimmi McIntosh scored six and led the team with four assists.
Washburn failed to have a player score in double digits and was led by Julie Ravn’s nine points. Felisha Gibbs scored eight points, all in the first half, and finished the game with 12 rebounds for the Ichabods.
The Sailfish shot 40 percent for the game. Washburn shot 38.2 percent overall but was held to a 29.6 percent clip in the second half including just 2-of-12 from beyond the arc. The Ichabods connected on just 5-of-23 from long range in the game. The Sailfish made 5-of-15 tried from long distance.
The Sailfish will make the short trip to No. 3 Nova Southeastern on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. tip. The ‘Fish return to Rubin Arena on Saturday, Dec. 5 to take on Barry at noon. The time has been moved up to accommodate the NCAA South Region Volleyball Championship match which will be held in Rubin Arena later that night.
