VALDOSTA, Ga.- Sailfish men’s basketball now sits at 3-3 on the year after holding off Lee University 68-66 in the final day of the Valdosta State Classic Saturday afternoon. The ‘Fish shot a dismal 32.9 percent from the field, but were helped by scoring 22 points off 20 turnovers by the Flames, and 17 points on second chance opportunities.
The Sailfish didn’t see their first lead of the contest until 10:05 into the contest, and held onto their initial lead until the 4:43 mark in the first half. A three-pointer from Milos Kostic would regain a Sailfish 33-31 lead with 1:12 left in the first half, and both clubs would head into halftime with the Sailfish in front 36-31.
A shot behind the arc by Derick Yepes at the 18:24 mark in the second half extend the ‘Fish lead to 10, their widest margin on the afternoon. Lee University was able to cut the deficit to two points as each team would exchange blows for the remainder of the contest, but the relentless Sailfish refused to give in, and did not allow the Flames to regain the lead at any point in the second half.
Three Sailfish hit the double-digit scoring plateau on the afternoon, with Bakari Warthen finishing the afternoon with 13 points, and both Kostic and Yepes finished with 12 points.
