Sailfish Lose Second Half Lead, Fall to Mocs

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Nina Krstic tied a school record with seven treys but the Sailfish were unable to hold off the Mocs from Florida Southern in the second half, falling 60-55.

The ‘Fish (0-5) held a three-point lead at halftime and pushed it out to 13 at 42-29 in the third quarter with 6:08 to play but the Mocs outscored PBA 17-7 the rest of the quarter to pull within four at 50-46. The Mocs (5-0) carried the momentum into the final quarter, outscoring PBA 14-5 in the final stanza.

Krstic poured in a game-high 24 points, hitting 7-of-12 from long range to lead the ‘Fish. The senior also grabbed seven rebounds and handed out three assists. Darsan DeShazier added 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting with Hannah Grim joining them in double digits with 10 points.

Both teams went cold from the floor down the stretch, missing a combined six straight shots from the three minute mark until 32 seconds remained when Jensen Blassage made a pair of free throws to give the Mocs a 56-52 lead.

The lead grew to six after two more free throws, but a final trey from Krstic brought the ‘Fish back to within on possession. The Mocs sank two more at the line, finishing the game 18-of-19 from the charity stripe, to seal the victory.

Neither team shot well from the floor as the ‘Fish made 20-of-56 (35.7 percent) from the floor and the Mocs connected on 20-of-60 (33.3 percent) overall. Florida Southern made just 2-of-11 from long distance but made up for that at the free throw line. The Sailfish connected on 8-of-24 from long range and 7-of-10 from the free throw line.

The Sailfish assisted on 14 of their 20 made field goals, led by DeShazier’s four. Krstic and Kimmi McIntosh each added three. DeShazier also picked up three steal while Ayanna Holmes led the team with four. Holmes also led the team with eight rebounds and added seven points.

The ‘Fish are back in action on Saturday, hosting Washburn (Kan.) at 2 p.m. in Rubin Arena.
