WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic men’s soccer team gets to play another day after defeating the University of West Alabama 2-0 Saturday night in the second round of the NCAA tournament. The match was the first time in PBA history where the Sailfish have hosted an NCAA regional game.
The opening twenty minutes saw several opportunities for both teams, but it wasn’t until the 25th minute when Oscar Farias shot from the left side of the box beating the diving Tigers’ goalkeeper. The goal was Farias’ ninth on the year and was assisted by Jermaine Metz.
The Sailfish extended their lead to 2-0 in the 56th minute when Lucas Coutinho blasted a left footed shot into the far corner of the net, sending the Sailfish crowd into a frenzy at the Rinker Athletic Campus. The goal was Coutinho’s eighth on the year and was assisted by Tom Gavin.
“This season has been a journey so far, and I’ve told the guys since day one that this year is a marathon and not a sprint,” said head coach Brian McMahon. “It is great we got the win tonight, but we have to turn our focus to an outstanding Rollins team as we get ready for Friday night.”
Outside of the two Sailfish goals, the game was pretty even statistically. The ‘Fish outshot the Tigers 10-9, each club took two corner kicks, and Steeven Raymont made three saves compared to Brad Louis’ two on the night. The statistic that stood out for both teams were fouls, as the Tigers were called for 14 of them, while the ‘Fish only committed eight.
The Sailfish are now 16-1-1 on the year, and advance to the Sweet Sixteen next Friday, Nov. 20 and they will host Rollins College at the Rinker Athletic Campus. The game time is still TBD, so stay tuned on our social media pages and pbasailfish.com for further information about the match.
