Sailfish Open Their Season With 77-60 Win Over Ave Maria

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic men’s basketball team opened their 2015-2016 campaign in the friendly confines of the Rubin Arena Friday night, coming out victorious 77-60 over Ave Maria University. The Sailfish were lead offensively by sophomore Lucas Morales’ 19 points.
The first half saw some back-and-forth action early, as there were four lead changes and three ties. The ‘Fish opened up the contest with a 6-2 run over the Gyrenes, which was a lead the Sailfish would hold for the first seven minutes. Ave Maria took a 16-14 lead with 12:18 left in the half, which was their largest lead of the game. The ‘Fish tied it up on the ensuing possession via a Bakari Warthen steal and coast-to-coast slam dunk.
The Sailfish built their first half lead to 10 points with 4:44 left on the clock, and headed into the locker room at the half leading 38-31.
The second half was all Sailfish, as the closest the Gyrenes got was within five points. The Sailfish capitalized off Ave Maria turnovers and missed opportunities as they spread the lead to what was eventually a 17-point game.
The Sailfish had four players score in double figures, and were lead statistically by Lucas Morales, who scored 19 points, and grabbed 15 rebounds. The sophomore also dished out an assist and picked up three blocks on the evening.
Freshman Bakari Warthen scored 13 points while snagging six rebounds, and senior Michael Simpson scored 14 points including two triples, and grabbed two rebounds and dished out an assist.
While the Sailfish won by 17, they struggled from the charity stripe, as the ‘Fish only knocked down 21-of-41 attempts on the night. The ‘Fish shot 42.6 percent overall from the floor on the night hitting 26-of-61 attempts.
The ‘Fish dominated the inside as they outscored the Gyrenes in the paint 40-28, and the ‘Fish scored 12 points off second chances and 10 via the fast break.
Ave Maria was lead by Brandon Dean, who scored 23 for the Green and Blue while grabbing nine rebounds.
The Sailfish will be back in acton Wednesday night, Nov. 18 as they travel to Daytona Beach, Fla. to take on fellow Sunshine State Conference provisional member Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The ‘Fish return to the Rubin Arena Saturday, Nov. 21, at 4 p.m. as they host Eckerd College.
