Sailfish Fall in Season Opener to Lakers 85-61

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Palm Beach Atlantic women’s basketball team opened their 2015-16 season on Friday night, participating in the B.J. Ford Classic hosted by Armstrong Atlantic University. The Sailfish (0-1) fell to Clayton State University (1-0) by a final score of 85-61.
The first quarter saw the Sailfish fall behind by double-digits, as the Lakers ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 22-10 lead. The second quarter was more of the same, as the Lakers outscored the ‘Fish 21-16 to take a 43-26 lead into the break.
The Sailfish shot only 33 percent from the field in the half, while Clayton State shot 44 percent, including 3-of-9 from behind the arc. Junior Nikkira Brown led the ‘Fish with six points in the first half, as she was two-of-three from the field and two-of-two from the free throw line. Ayanna Holmes added an impressive six rebounds in the first half, as the junior played the entire 20 minutes of the frame.
The third quarter is where the Sailfish offense came to life, scoring 25 points in the first eight minutes of the quarter, and cutting a Laker lead that was 19 early in the quarter all the way down to five points with 3:38 to go in the quarter. The Lakers responded however, finishing the quarter on a 14-4 run to take a commanding 66-51 lead into the fourth quarter.
Clayton State outscored the ‘Fish 19-10 in the fourth quarter to complete their 24 point victory. The Lakers were led offensively by Tweety Hawkins, who finished the game with 15 points in only 17 minutes of play.
The Sailfish shot an impressive 64 percent (16-25) from the floor in the second half, but could only connect on 1-of-7 from long range. The ‘Fish finished the night 12-of-17 from the free throw line.
The Sailfish were led offensively by Hannah Grim, who scored a team-high 11 points on 5-of-16 shooting. Grim also added five steals for the ‘Fish on the night. Sophomores Darsan DeShazier and Nkiru Anyagaligbo both scored in double-figures as well for PBA, as they both finished with 10 points, as Anyagaligbo also added four rebounds and was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor.
The Sailfish have a quick turnaround before their next game, as they play host team Armstrong Atlantic on Saturday at 4 p.m.
