DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic men’s and women’s tennis teams traveled to Bethune-Cookman College over the weekend and fared very well in a field that included four NCAA Division I schools and several other Division II schools from around the Southeast.
The Sailfish took home championships in two flights, highlighted by senior Nicolas Uryson winning the top men’s singles flight. The ‘Fish also took home victories in two consolation brackets, including junior Valerie Nagovitcina winning three consecutive matches to win the consolation bracket in the women’s maroon flight.
Uryson won his opening match in straight sets, but was tested in his quarterfinal match, as Uryson dropped the first set to Deni Zmak from Embry-Riddle University, but would rebound as he won the match 4-6, 6-2, 10-8. In the semifinals, Uryson defeated Carlos Waitman from FAMU by a score of 7-5, 6-3, and in the finals, he defeated Alex Chepik from the host Bethune-Cookman(6-1, 7-5).
In the men’s maroon doubles draw, the team of Thomas Salmon and Pietro de Silva rolled through the field, winning their first three matches with ease and defeating the all-Division I team of Barrera/Waitman 8-4 in the final match.
After suffering a first round loss in the second women’s singles flight to the eventual champion, Nagovitcina rallied to win three straight matches, including the consolation final against Savannah Fuller from Rollins College.
The Sailfish women’s doubles team of Michaela Mignemi and Julia Cusumano also dropped their first match of the tournament, but would fire back, winning their second and third matches by 8-0 scores. Mignemi/Cusumano defeated the team of Toth/Walker from Florida Tech by a 8-3 score in the consolation final.
The tournament wraps up the fall schedule for both teams, as they will now start preparations for their Spring 2016 season, which opens up on Feb. 7 at Flagler College.
