Men's Basketball Adds Eight to 2015-2016 Squad

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- With the 2015-2016 basketball season just around the corner, head coach David Balza officially announced the eight newcomers to the Sailfish squad this year.

Malek Barber | FR | 6’5 | 220 | F | North Port, Fla.  (North Port HS)
  • Averaged 15 ppg, 11 rpg and 4 spg as a senior
  • Shot 47% from the floor and 89% from the charity stripe
  • Named 2nd Team All-State in 7A
  • Area Player of the Year as a Senior
  • 4x All-Area 1st Team & 3x Team MVP
  • 4x Scholar Athlete, graduating with over a 4.0 g.p.a.
  • Hauled down a school record 309 rebounds as a senior
  • 7A Player of the Year runner-up as a junior
  • Did you know?:  Malek mentors youth in his home town at both the elementary school and Youth programs in North Port.

Bakari Warthen | FR | 6’4 | 175 | G | West Palm Beach, Fla.  (Dwyer HS)
  • Local star from nearby William T. Dwyer HS.
  • Led Dwyer to a 25-5 record and a District Championship in 7A.
  • Named 1st Team All-Palm Beach County as a senior.
  • Averaged 12.2 ppg, 7.2 rpg, 3 apg and 2 spg, shooting 51%  as a SR.
  • Averaged 12 ppg, 7 rpg, 1.5 apg and 3 spg as a junior.
  • Played for legendary coach Fred Ross at Dwyer.
  • Did you know?: Bakari is not the first Dwyer athlete to play for Coach Balza.  Former Panther, Kyle Marks, played for Balza at FGCU after transferring from Nebraska.

Casey Carpinello | FR | 6’2 | 175 | G | Boca Raton, Fla.  (Boca Christian HS)
  • Averaged 20.5 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 6.5 apg and 3.6 spg as a senior.
  • Palm Beach Post 1st Team All-County.
  • Played in the Palm Beach County North-South All Star Game.
  • All-time leader in career assists (645) at Boca Christian H.S.
  • Most consecutive starts (100) in school history.
  • 2nd leading scorer in Boca Christian H.S. history.
  • 4th leading scorer in Palm Beach County as a senior.
  • Palm Beach County Player of the Week for tweek of Dec. 1, 2014.
  • Highlands Christian Holiday Classic Tournament MVP.
  • Did you know?:  Casey was also named District Batter of the Year and District Player of the Year in Baseball.

Chase Picerne | FR | 5’9 | 175 | G | Maitland, Fla. (Orangewood Christian HS)
  • Captain of his high school basketball team at Orangewood Christian.
  • Averaged 8.7 ppg, 2.3 rpg and 6.8 apg as a senior
  • Also played football at OCHS
  • A member of the 2013 3A State Academic Championship Team
  • Marketing major
  • Did you know?: Chase is one of 14 children in his family. Twelve of his brothers and sisters are adopted.

Giles Chapman | GR | 5’9 | 165 | G | Oakland, Calif. (Washington HS/Univ of Nevada)
  • Transfers to PBA for grad school from Univ. of Nevada, where he played D1 football.
  • Averaged 12 ppg and 7 apg as a high school freshman at Eastside Prep.
  • Finished at Washington HS in Fremont, Calif., where he ultimately gave up basketball to concentrate on his best sport – football.
  • Had offers from numerous high major football programs out of HS
  • Working towards his Master’s degree in Leadership
  • Did you know?:  Giles was named NUC All-American First Team at the US Army All American Football Combine.

Shavanno Cooper | JR | 6’6 | 190 | F | Freeport, Bahamas (Lander Univ.)
  • Played in just five games at Lander before suffering a season ending injury
  • In those five games, averaged 9.6 ppg and 5.6 rpg
  • Named 1st Team All-Conference at Polk State CC as a sophomore
  • Named to the NJCAA Region VIII All-Tournament Team as a sophomore
  • Averaged 10.1 ppg and 7.0 rpg as a sophomore at Polk State (OH)
  • Averaged 5.5 ppg and 4.6 rpg as a freshman at Polk State
  • A native of Freeport, Bahamas, Cooper played his high school basketball at North Broward Prep in FL.
  • Majoring in Computer Science
  • Did you know?:  ‘Chevy’ was the final PBA recruit of the 2015 class, committing to the Sailfish while they were in Costa Rica in August.

Milos Kostic | SO | 6’8 | 225 | F | Belgrade, Serbia  (Appalachian State)
  • Played in 21 games in his freshman campaign at D1 Appalachian State
  • Averaged 7 minutes per game, scoring 1.9 ppg and grabbing 1.4 rpg
  • Familiar with Florida, having spent a prep year at IMG Academy
  • Averaged 10 ppg, 5 rpg and 5 apg at IMG
  • Two-time All-State honoree at Traders Point Christian Academy (IN)
  • Averaged 15 ppg, 7 rpg and 5 apg at TPCA
  • Did you know?: Milos becomes the second Serbian athlete to play for Coach Balza at PBA. Marko Djekovic played for Balza in 2013-14.

Osandai Vaughn | JR | 6’4 | 205 | G | Charlotte, N.C.  (Youngstown State)
  • Played in 28 games as a sophomore at D1 Youngstown State.
  • Averaged 6.6 ppg and 3.1 rpg.
  • Shot 43% from the arc and 75% from the FT line.
  • Started the final 17 games, during which stretch he averaged 10 ppg.
  • Had a career-high 18 points vs. UIC.
  • Played at Cape Fear Community College as a freshman.
  • Started all 30 games at Cape Fear.
  • Averaged 19.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg and 2 apg at Cape Fear.
  • Had a stretch of 12 consecutive games in which he scored 20+ points
  • Graduate of Phillip O Berry H.S. where he was named 1st Team All-State, averaging 18.9 ppg.
  • Did you know?: Osandai is one of two newcomers to have spent a year at prep school, having attended Charis Prep in NC
