Tennis Competes at ITA South Region Championships

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic men’s and women’s tennis teams traveled to the University of West Florida this weekend to participate in the ITA South Region Championships.
Nicolas Uryson was slotted as the No. 7 seed on the men’s side of the draw, and advanced to the quarterfinals, beating opponents from Valdosta State University and Mississippi College in straight sets, before losing to the overall No. 1 seed Ahmed Triki (6-4, 6-4).
Freshman Kathi Tesar won her opening round women’s singles match, defeating Selin Devrimci from Florida Southern College (6-4, 6-3). Junior Valerie Nagovitcina had a great run on Saturday and Sunday, winning four matches to win the consolation bracket. Nagovitcina beat opponents from Lee University and Embry-Riddle in straight sets on Saturday and beat Erica Erickson from West Florida (6-3, 6-2) and Lorena Rionda from Florida Southern (6-2, 2-6, 11-9) to finish undefeated in the consolation bracket.
In the women’s doubles side of the tournament, the Sailfish teams of Tesar/Nagovitcina won their first round match 8-0 before being taken down by the No. 1 overall doubles team. The team of Maja Jovic/Yoanna Peshev also won their first round match 8-4 before losing their Round of 16 match 9-8.
The Sailfish men’s team will be off until Oct. 9 when they will travel to Melbourne, Fla. to participate in the Slam Tree Doubles Tournament. The women’s team will be back in action on Oct. 16 when they will take part in the Grizzly Open in Lawrenceville, Ga.
