WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic women’s soccer team pulled off an exciting come from behind victory on Sunday afternoon, as a Kayla Fisher blast over the Maryville keeper just 19 seconds into overtime sealed the win for the Sailfish in the final game of the PBA Kickoff Classic.
Palm Beach Atlantic (2-0-0) got off to a sluggish start offensively, but picked it up in the second half with 11 shots on goal, outshooting Maryville University (1-1-0) by a total of 20-12 on the day.
Maryville would strike first in the match behind the right foot of Hana McGinis, who in the 12th minute, netted her second goal in as many games this season.
The Saints played bend-but-not-break defense for most of the second half, with the ‘Fish putting seven shots on goal in the half, and not scoring the equalizing goal until the 87th minute when Kasey Wyer broke free into the corner and proceeded to cross the ball into the box for a nice finish from Monica Rojas.
The score would stay 1-1 through the end of regulation, but Rojas would be on the other end of the game winning goal, as her pass set up Fisher’s impressive game winner.
Kayla Wincko (2-0-0) played solid in the net for the ‘Fish, saving six on the day, including two great saves late in the second half which prevented Maryville from opening up a two goal lead.
The Sailfish will be back in action on Thursday, September 10th, as they will travel to St. Petersburg, Florida, to take on Eckerd College at 7 pm.
