PBA Cross Country Makes Strong Debut at FAU Invitational

BOCA RATON, Fla.- The Sailfish women’s cross country team made the short trek to Boca Raton and the South County Regional Park on Friday evening to participate in the second annual Florida Atlantic University Invitational. PBA competed for the first meet of the season under the leadership of new head coach Maryellen Powers and finished with four runners in the top-40 for a second-place finish among Division II participants.
Cloudy conditions hovered over the site on Friday as the six participating teams battled early season weather concerns all afternoon.
Nova Southeastern University delivered the top team score for Division II programs with 18 points followed by Palm Beach Atlantic (46 points) and Lynn University (64 points). FAU boasted a Division I best 27 points followed by Miami (38 points) and Florida International University (68 points).
Leading the Sailfish on the day was newcomer Sophia Miller who completed the 5,000 meter race with a time of 21:21 to conclude the race in 19th place overall. The winning time came from University of Miami sophomore Gabrielle Hesslau who ran an impressive 17:56, nearly a minute faster than UM teammate Anne Den Otter who finished second at 18:51.
Following Miller’s time for PBA was Alise Montgomery at 22:14 for 25th place while veteran Lexi Fenton completed the course at 23:15 for a 36th place finish.
Alyssa Hearing, a former PBA women’s soccer player, went in at 24:01 for 40th place followed by Kayla Webb (25:54), Sydney Jones (28:05) and Lauren McInnes (32:46).
With just a short preseason training schedule to prepare them for the FAU Invitational the team will be back to training in preparation for their next meet which is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Mountain Dew Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
