MIAMI, Fla.- The Sailfish men’s soccer team played their first exhibition contest of the season on Saturday evening by traveling to NCAA Division I Florida International University. After a lengthy lightning delay the two teams squared off with the Panthers earning a 3-2 victory at FIU Soccer Stadium.

The first half ended tied at one goal apiece for the Sailfish and the Panthers, with the ‘Fish scoring first via a penalty kick from senior Tom Gavin in the 28th minute. The Panthers were able to tie it up eleven minutes later when Juan Benedetty scored the equalizer.

The second half saw the Panthers take a 2-1 lead in the 59th minute. The Sailfish had several opportunities to tie the match, but were unsuccessful, and the Panthers expanded their lead to 3-1 in the 72nd minute.

The ‘Fish narrowed the gap in the 88th minute with a goal from sophomore Zac Sitler, who was assisted by Phill Cordoso but unfortunately that would be the end of the scoring as the Sailfish were unable to tie the game in the remaining two minutes.

Head Coach Brian McMahon had plenty of positive things to take away from the team’s first competitive action of the season.

“Overall I have to be pleased with the game, regardless of the result,” said McMahon. “We were able to go deep into the bench as we played 23 guys on the team, with several players seeing time at the collegiate level for the first time in their careers.”

“Plenty of credit to FIU, they're a very good program,” continued the Sailfish head coach. “For us to play our first game of the year on the road, versus a Division I program and only lose by one goal is something to be proud of. We started off well as we took the early lead, we just unfortunately wore out earlier than I would have liked but we also finished strong with some key players coming in off the bench.”
